Youโve likely heard the news that hundreds of Bed Bath & Beyond stores are closing, and as of April 23, 2023, they officially confirmed that they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. So what does that mean for your Bed Bath & Beyond returns now that all stores are closing by June 30? Are you on the hook for anything you recently bought from Bed Bath & Beyond with no hopes of getting your money back? Not so fast. Let me explain whatโs going on with the Bed Bath & Beyond return policy.
As weโve reported, Bed Bath & Beyond is winding down their operations with liquidation sales and other end-of-an-era practices. In an email they sent out on April 23, hereโs what they said:
- โOur stores are open and serving customers. However, we have initiated a process to wind down operations.โ
- โWe expect to process returns and exchanges in accordance with our usual policies until May 24, 2023, for items purchased prior to April 23, 2023.โ
But they have since changed the dates a little bit, so now you have until May 24, 2023, to return anything you bought before April 26. If you buy something now during their liquidation sales, itโs considered final sale. No returns. No exchanges. But youโve likely got a killer deal, anyway.
Hereโs a full breakdown of what you need to know about the Bed Bath & Beyond return policy, given the recent news.

What to know if you bought something during liquidation sales:
All Bed Bath & Beyond sales on or after April 26 are final, which means no returns or exchanges.
Like they said in their email to customers on April 23, youโll only get the normal Bed Bath & Beyond returns process (which we cover below) if you made your purchase prior to April 26, when they started their liquidation sales.
ย
If you bought something before April 26, 2023:
1. Youโll have until May 24 to make your Bed Bath & Beyond returns.
In most cases, you have up to 90 days to return something to Bed Bath & Beyond โ but they only accept returns through May 24.
On their website they say, โYou have up to 90 days after purchase to exchange or return, unless noted in our exceptions below.โ And boy, do they have exceptions. Itโs super important to review the caveats Iโll lay out below, as the return window gets shorter when you buy certain products.
Air mattresses and electric items must be returned within 60 days.
According to their return policy, you only get 60 days to return air mattresses and electric items like small kitchen appliances, soda machines, vacuums, baby monitors, and personal care appliances.
Smart home devices and seasonal items must be returned within 30 days.
You only have 30 days to return smart home technology (think thermostats, smart security and safety devices, smart doorbells, etc.). This 30-day window also applies to seasonal items like patio furniture, grills, holiday products, Halloween costumes, and other trending decor.

You need your receipt to get a refund.
To get a refund when youโre returning something to Bed Bath & Beyond, just show them your receipt. If you lost your receipt, donโt panic! Bed Bath & Beyond associates can work their magic to look up your purchase.
If you made a purchase within the past year, theyโll try to find a record of it by using the original credit/debit card or checking account number to track it down. If they canโt find it, thereโs good news: you still may be able to return or exchange new and unopened items without a receipt. Thereโs a good chance these items will be accepted for an exchange or a refund in the form of a Merchandise Credit.

ย
Make sure the items youโre returning are unopened and unused.
As with most store return policies, the items youโre returning canโt be used or opened. Be sure you donโt mess up the packaging of something if youโre unsure you want to keep it. I will say that most Bed Bath & Beyond employees are really helpful, so if you do open something, try to close it as best you can and tell them why you no longer want the product. Theyโre usually pretty understanding.
ย
2. Hereโs how to make a Bed Bath & Beyond return for purchases you made before April 26.
Return the items in store.
The easiest way to return something to Bed Bath & Beyond is by taking it to your local store. Simply go up to an open register, show the cashier your receipt, and get a refund. Done and done!
ย
Return the items online.
If thereโs not a Bed Bath & Beyond store near you, fear not. You can return things online, and itโs usually always free to ship something back. (There are exceptions to this if the product youโre returning is a huge piece of furniture.)
ย
How to return something you bought on BedBathandBeyond.com:
- Go to the Online Returns page.
- Type in your order number and email address.
- Select the item you want to return.
- Explain the reason why youโre returning it.
- Print out your free shipping label.
- Attach it to a box with the item you want to return inside.
- Take it to a UPS location and ship it.
- Expect a refund to hit your account seven to 10 days after Bed Bath & Beyond gets the order.
ย
3. There are a few exceptions to the Bed Bath & Beyond return policy, like for special orders and gift cards.
โAs Isโ items canโt be returned.
At Bed Bath & Beyond, โAs Isโ items are equivalent to final sale items. You canโt return anything marked โAs Is,โ no matter what. Always be mindful of this when shopping in the clearance section.
ย
You canโt return personalized or special-order items.
If anything is monogrammed, personalized in any way, or custom-made, you canโt return it. This makes sense, as Bed Bath & Beyond canโt resell it since it was made just for you.
ย
ย
You canโt return gift cards.
This is pretty standard across all stores, but gift cards cannot be returned for cash. If you get a Bed Bath & Beyond gift card that you donโt want, simply regift it to someone who would or resell your gift card online.
ย
4. Youโll get your refund within seven to 10 days.
If you return something in store to Bed Bath & Beyond, you can expect the refund to hit your card seven to 10 days after returning the item. If you sent an item back to Bed Bath & Beyond through the mail, it might take a little bit longer to get a refund. You should see a refund within seven to 10 days after your item reaches them.
